The number of children dying from measles-like symptoms at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) has risen to 50, hospital authorities said on Thursday, as fresh admissions continue amid an ongoing outbreak.

Officials said four more children died in the past 24 hours, worsening concerns over the situation.

RMCH spokesperson Shankar K. Biswas confirmed the figures, saying the outbreak has placed significant pressure on hospital services.

Hospital data showed that 27 new patients with measles symptoms were admitted on the same day, while 24 were discharged after recovery. A total of 132 patients are currently undergoing treatment.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, 479 patients have been admitted to the hospital with measles-like symptoms.

According to hospital records, deaths have been reported daily over the past week: four on Thursday (April 9), three on Wednesday, one on Tuesday, two on Monday, two on Sunday, three on Saturday, and one on Friday.

Doctors said the majority of patients are children, who are particularly vulnerable to complications. Symptoms include fever, skin rashes, cough and red eyes, and they urged immediate hospital admission if these signs appear.

Health experts stressed the need for expanded vaccination coverage, isolation of infected patients, and increased public awareness, warning that the situation could worsen without urgent intervention.
