Measles outbreak hits Rangpur: Five children dead in 3 days
Rangpur is grappling with a severe measles outbreak, claiming the lives of five children in just three days as hospitals report a sharp rise in critical pediatric cases.
At Rangpur Medical College Hospital, four children have tested positive for measles and have been moved to a dedicated isolation ward. Over 100 more children are admitted with pneumonia and respiratory distress, many in critical condition.
Hospital Director Brigadier General Ashiqur Rahman confirmed the measles cases, stating that all necessary measures, including ICU support, have been activated. So far, no adults have been affected.
Doctors warned that the disease often starts with common symptoms like fever and cold, making early detection difficult. A rash appearing later typically confirms the infection. “Due to its highly contagious nature, affected children are kept under strict isolation and monitored round-the-clock,” said Dr. Ashfaq.
Relatives of the patients described the rapid progression: high fever, severe breathing difficulties, followed by a rash. Families have also raised concerns over limited ICU and CCU beds, stressing that critically ill children may need urgent intensive care at any moment.
Health authorities are urging parents to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if children show symptoms of fever, respiratory distress, or rashes.
