Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md. Mahfuz Alam has called on the media to take a firm stance against rumors and misinformation and to restore public confidence.

He made the remarks at a training workshop on “Preventing Media Malpractice and Ensuring Objective Reporting” organised by the Bangladesh Press Council for members of the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity on Monday (November 24).

Alam highlighted the spread of deliberate misinformation, noting its intensification during the past 15 years, and criticised certain media outlets for spreading panic rather than public awareness during the recent earthquake.

He emphasised the media’s role in maintaining public trust, warning that lack of confidence allows misinformation to mislead citizens and create disorder.

He also stressed responsible media conduct ahead of the upcoming general election.

The workshop, chaired by Press Council Chairman Justice A K M Abdul Hakim, included speakers such as Secretary Mahbuba Farzana, Financial Express Editor Shamsul Huq Zahid, and DRU President Abu Saleh Akon.

Fifty journalists attended the workshop, and awarded certificates at its conclusion.
