Mentally challenged teen tortured by hanging upside down
A mentally challenged teenager, named Yusuf Mallik (18), son of Sharif Mallick from Bagdah village, was tortured by being hung from a tree in Jashore's Abhaynagar upazila on suspicion of stealing a van.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning, October 23, in Bagdah village of Chalishia Union.
Following the circulation of a video depicting the torture on Facebook, police arrested one individual involved in the incident.
Regarding the matter, Faruqe Sheikh, a member of ward number six of Chalishia Union of the upazila, said, "A van belonging to Golam Mawla, a driver from Bagdah village in Chalishia Union, was stolen from his home on Tuesday night. Golam Mawla, along with his neighbors Ahmad Ali and Rony, severely beat Yusuf Mallik by hanging him upside down from a tree, suspecting him of being the thief."
Sharif Mallik, father of Yusuf, said, "My mentally challenged son was tortured and injured by being hung upside down from a tree by neighbors Ghulam Mawla, Ahmad Ali, and Rony for a theft he did not commit. He later received first aid for his injuries."
Sana Abdul Mannan, chairman at Chalishia Union Parishad, said, "I am aware of the incident, and it is truly shocking."
Imadul Karim, officder-in-charge of Abhaynagar police station, said, "A case has been registered at the police station, and Ahmed Ali, who was involved in the incident, has been arrested. Efforts are underway to apprehend the others involved."
