Mentally unstable woman allegedly raped in Cumilla

A local BNP activist has been accused of raping a mentally unstable woman in Sadar South upazila, Cumilla. Police have launched an operation to arrest the accused after a CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media.

The accused, Khokon, also known as Lengra Khokon, is the son of late Dulal Mia of North Durgapur village in the upazila. He is locally known as a BNP activist.

According to police and local sources, the woman was sleeping in front of a library at the Bijoypur Bazar on Thursday night, July 2. She was allegedly raped later that night. The matter came to light on Saturday morning when the CCTV footage of the incident spread on social media.

Barpara union ward no 3 BNP president Shafiqul Islam said Khokon is not an office-bearer of the party but a worker. He strongly condemned the incident, saying organisational action would be taken against the accused and full cooperation would be given to the administration in legal action.

Sadar South Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rokibul Islam said police launched an operation to arrest the accused after obtaining the CCTV footage around 10:00 am on Saturday. However, he had fled the area before that.

The OC said multiple police teams are conducting operations to arrest the accused. Necessary legal action is underway.
