Midnight earthquakes rock Dhaka, Chattogram and other areas
Three earthquakes struck along the Bangladesh-India-Myanmar border region within about 75 minutes late Saturday night and early Sunday, shaking Dhaka, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Feni and several other parts of Bangladesh.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first quake, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, occurred at 12:12am in the Myanmar-Bangladesh border area.
A second earthquake, measuring 5.0, hit the Lunglei area of India’s Mizoram state just a minute later, at 12:13am. The tremor was felt strongly across parts of southeastern Bangladesh, including Chattogram, Cumilla, Feni and Noakhali.
The third and weakest quake, measuring 3.8, struck near Agartala in India’s Tripura state at 1:27am. Tremors from the quake were also felt in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh.
The closely spaced earthquakes caused concern among residents in several areas, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.
Authorities have not reported any significant structural damage from the three tremors.
