Cyclone Remal causes downpour
Miking calls for leaving houses in landslide-prone areas in Bandarban
Everyday life has been disrupted in Bandarban due to the impact of Cyclone Remal as the roads inside the hills have become dangerously slippery due to hail and intermittent rain.
To avoid loss of life due to landslides in the rain, the district administration and the municipality are conducting miking to make people aware of possible danger.
Through miking, people have been encouraged to leave landslide-prone areas and move to safe shelters. It was raining and windy in the district since Sunday afternoon.
According to the administration, due to the impact of Cyclone Remal, it has been raining non-stop in seven upazilas of the district since Saturday. To deal with the situation, 207 shelters have been opened in thirty-four unions of seven upazilas of the district.
Meanwhile, the roads of Bandarban town, Ruma, Thanchi, and Lama upazilas along with Rowangchari-Ruma, Thanchi-Alikdam toads have become slippery and dangerous due to torrential rains.
Transport worker Amal Das said that the internal roads have become dangerous due to two days of continuous downpour. The Ruma and Thanchi roads where renovation work is ongoing have become dangerously slippery due to rain and muddy ground.
Scientific Officer of Bandarbas Soil and Water Conservation Centre Mahbubul Islam said that the rain is mainly due to the effect of cyclone in the district. Rainfall is likely to increase as the cyclone crosses the coast. Due to the danger of landslides, everyone is advised to take shelter in safe shelter.
Mayor of Bandarban Municipality Md Samsul Islam said in all the nine wards of the municipality, people are being evacuated from the dangerous slums to safe shelters.
Deputy Commissioner of Bandarban Shah Mojahid Uddin said, “Due to the effect of Cyclone Remal, it has been raining in the district for two days.
People are being encouraged to leave the foothills and vulnerable settlements to safe shelters due to the fear of loss of life due to landslides. The administration has all kinds of preparations to deal with the cyclone situation. Adequate quantities of dry food and relief supplies are available.”
