Mild earthquake shakes Dhaka, other parts of Bangladesh

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake has jolted Dhaka and some other parts of Bangladesh.

The earthquake felt at 1:52pm on Friday, said met office. The Meteorological Department said that the earthquake's origin was Satkhira. The epicentre of the earthquake was 11 km from Kaliganj Upazila.

Meteorologist Farzana Sultana of the Meteorological Department's Earthquake Monitoring Center said that the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.4 on the Richter scale. However, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has stated that its magnitude at the origin was 5.3.

Humayun Akhtar, a former professor of the Department of Geology at Dhaka University, said that the tremors were felt in two consecutive phases and the origin was Satkhira.

India's Anandabazar Online reported that tremors were also felt in various districts of West Bengal, where the magnitude was 5 on the Richter scale.

No report of any damage or injuries have been reported till filing the report at 2pm.
