Milton Samadder and his wife sent to jail
A Dhaka court has ordered Milton Samadder, Chairman of the Child and Old Age Care Ashram, and his wife Mithu Halder to be sent to jail after they surrendered in connection with an attempted murder case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Minhajur Rahman rejected their bail plea and issued the order on Saturday, 17 May.
Milton Samadder’s lawyer, Ohiduzzaman Biplob, stated that the court had accepted the charge sheet of the case on 6 May. However, Milton could not appear in court at that time as his mother had passed away on 5 May. A petition was filed seeking time, but the court rejected it and issued arrest warrants against both Milton and his wife. On Saturday, they surrendered and sought bail, but the court denied the request and ordered them to jail.
It is notable that on the night of 1 May 2023, Milton Samadder was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) police during a raid in the Mirpur area. Three separate cases were filed against him, including forging a death certificate, torture in a so-called torture cell, and human trafficking. He was taken on remand multiple times in different cases before being released on bail.
However, in the latest attempted murder case, DB Police Inspector Ataur Rahman submitted the charge sheet to the court, naming both Milton and his wife Mithu Halder as accused.
