The memorial of Mir Mahfuzur Rahman (Mughdho) in Chinair under Sadar Upazila of Brahmanbaria, was defaced with black paint between Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

The affected memorial, located in front of Chinair Degree College in Masihata Union of the upazila, had been installed after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s image at the site was previously damaged on 5 August.

Mughdho was shot dead in Dhaka’s Uttara on 18 July 2024 during an anti-discrimination movement. Since his death, memorials and portraits have been set up across the country in his memory.

According to a local resident, tensions between two factions of BNP at the college, which surfaced during a freshman welcoming event last Sunday, may have triggered the attack.

Ali Azam, assistant professor of the college, said the act could be an attempt by a group to disrupt peace in Chinair.

Mohammad Azharul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station, said that police have visited the scene and that legal measures will be taken following the investigation.
