Mirza Abbas accuses government of political bias
BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has alleged that the current interim government is showing favoritism by supporting one political group while sidelining others.
Speaking at a silent procession and rally in front of the BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan, Abbas warned the authorities not to attempt to eliminate the BNP. “We are cooperating with you. Announce elections promptly, and peace will return. Otherwise, we will believe the government itself is responsible for long-term unrest,” he said.
The rally, organized to commemorate the martyrs of the July-August mass uprisings, began at 5 PM and proceeded through Kakrail and Mouchak, ending near Abul Hotel. Members of law enforcement were present to ensure security, and leaders from the BNP’s women’s wing led the march.
In his address, Abbas criticized political actors who, he claimed, are trying to build their careers by exploiting the legacy of the uprising. “The martyrs did not sacrifice their lives for any individual or party. They fought for the people’s freedom,” he stated. “But now, their legacy is being used for political gain.”
He also condemned a religious leader who had previously criticized Jamaat-e-Islami but is now aligning with them. Abbas noted that Jamaat had, at various times, aligned itself with both the BNP and Awami League to gain ministerial posts. “They have always been opportunists,” he said.
Abbas further warned against attempts to equate the BNP with the ruling Awami League. “Watch your words. Such irresponsible comments can inflame public sentiment,” he cautioned. “BNP is not a party of chaos — we fight for democracy and the people’s rights.”
Highlighting the BNP’s continued struggle, Abbas said, “For 17 years we have been fighting for voting rights and democracy. Some are trying to erase us, but as long as one BNP member is alive, they will not succeed.”
The event was organized by Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP, with Convener Rafiqul Haque Majnu presiding and Member Secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin conducting.
