BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has accused certain groups of conspiring to delay national elections in Bangladesh to remain in power without holding a vote.

Addressing a discussion meeting organized by UK BNP President MA Malek at a community center in Sylhet’s Pathantula on Monday, Abbas said, “We fought for democracy and voting rights. After 17 years of struggle, the government has fallen and Hasina has left. However, her accomplices remain in various administrative positions, from the Secretariat down to the union level. They do not want free and fair elections.”

Abbas further alleged that another group, having assumed power, is actively trying to postpone elections to extend their rule without electoral approval.

He announced plans to launch another movement demanding voting rights, noting concerns raised by government bureaucrats suggesting elections may not be held. “BNP will ensure elections by mobilizing the people. If necessary, we will start another movement for voting rights,” he added.

Abbas also blamed the Awami League government for the deteriorating health of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. “She was sentenced on false charges in a conspiracy aimed at eliminating her. Many believe she was poisoned and denied proper medical treatment abroad. This is an attempt to undermine Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty. Khaleda Zia’s illness is not natural,” he said.

Regarding the proportional representation (PR) system, Abbas said many in Bangladesh are unfamiliar with it and criticized political parties for sending mixed messages. “The same party says different things at different times—sometimes elections will be held, sometimes they won’t, and sometimes they mention the PR system, which most people don’t understand,” he explained.

He urged politicians to educate themselves on the PR system and reaffirmed that elections will be held under the system familiar to the people of Bangladesh.
