Mirza Fakhrul’s brother files BNP nomination for Thakurgaon-1 by-election

Mirza Faisal Amin, the BNP-nominated candidate for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election, filed his nomination papers on Sunday (September 27), entering the race for the seat vacated after his elder brother, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, left Parliament to assume the presidency.

Faisal Amin, president of Thakurgaon district BNP, submitted the papers to District Election Officer and Returning Officer Md Kamrul Islam at the district election office around noon, accompanied by party leaders and activists.

Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Delawar Hossain, backed by the 11-party alliance, also submitted his nomination papers on the final day for filing. The two candidates have now formally entered the by-election process, subject to scrutiny by the Election Commission.

The Thakurgaon-1 seat became vacant on August 22 following Fakhrul’s election as president. Voting is scheduled for October 29. Nomination papers will be scrutinised on September 29, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until October 7 and electoral symbols will be allotted on October 8.

The constituency comprises Thakurgaon Sadar, Ruhia and Bhulli upazilas. According to the latest Election Commission figures, 515,525 voters are registered for the by-election, which will be held at 185 polling centres with 989 polling rooms.
