A woman has been killed and two others critically injured after miscreants stormed into a house during load shedding and attacked a rod-cement businessman, his wife and daughter in Kaliganj, Gazipur.

The attack occurred around 3am on Saturday in the Nagarvela Gayen Bari area of Nagari Union. The victims were identified as Kamrun Nahar, 35, who died, her husband Monjur Mia, 41, and their daughter Sanzida Akhter Mim, 16. Monjur Mia is currently in ICU at a hospital in Dhaka.

Locals said load shedding was ongoing at the time of the incident. Several men wearing half-pants and with towels wrapped around their faces were seen moving around in the area in the rain. Around 10 to 12 miscreants entered Monjur Mia's house by breaking the toilet ventilator instead of using the main entrance.

The attackers indiscriminately struck Monjur Mia, Kamrun Nahar and Mim with sharp weapons, including choppers and knives. When neighbours rushed to the scene hearing their screams, the attackers threatened to shoot them and hurled bricks at them.

Upon hearing the commotion, Monjur Mia's uncle, Nasir Bepari, stepped out with a torch. He said a miscreant ordered him to go inside and threatened to shoot if he stayed out. Soon after, a brick thrown by the attackers hit his right leg.

As more locals gathered, the attackers fled.

The three victims were rescued and taken to hospital, where doctors declared Kamrun Nahar dead. Monjur Mia was taken to a Dhaka hospital and is currently in ICU. Mim was also sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Monjur Mia's brother Mohan Mia said the attack may have been motivated by robbery. He said Monjur had planned to withdraw Tk 20 lakh from a savings scheme to buy a plot. While he is unsure whether the money had been withdrawn, the family suspects the attackers may have known about it.

Kaliganj Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Md Asaduzzaman said the victims were attacked with sharp weapons. Kamrun Nahar died at hospital. No cash or valuables have been reported missing so far. He said the motive and those involved are being investigated.

Police officials, including the Gazipur Superintendent of Police, along with PBI, DB, CID and Kaliganj police, visited the scene. Kamrun Nahar's body was sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Multiple law enforcement teams are working to identify and arrest the attackers.
