Miscreants cut off trunk, meat of dead elephant in Rangamati
After the death of an elderly wild elephant in Rangamati's Langadu upazila, miscreants mutilated its body and cut off the flesh of its trunk and legs. The incident took place in the Amlaki Bagan area of Bhasanyadam Union early on Monday (April 27).
According to local sources, a male elephant, about 70 years old, died after a long illness on Sunday morning. After death, the elephant's body was surrounded by other elephants of the same herd. As a result, the forest department could not immediately complete the autopsy or burial work.
When the elephants on guard moved into the forest during the Kalbaisakhi storm at night, the miscreants took the opportunity. It is believed that they cut off the trunk and meat of the dead elephant late at night.
The next morning, officials of the Chattogram Hill Tracts North Forest Department reached the spot and found the mutilated condition of the body. A team of doctors from Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and Dulahazara Safari Park also arrived there for the autopsy.
Chattogram Hill Tracts North Forest Department official Md. Rafiquzzaman Shah said that an investigation is underway to find out who committed this brutal incident. Those involved will be identified and legal action will be taken against them. The culprits will not be spared in any way.
The elephant's body is currently under the supervision of the Forest Department. This incident has raised new concerns about wildlife conservation.
