Miscreants severes expat's finger in Noakhali over extortion dispute

An expatriate in Begumganj Upazila had a finger severed after being attacked by local miscreants for refusing to pay extortion money.

The incident took place around 11:45am on Saturday (August 16) in front of the Contractor’s Pole area of Chaumuhani Municipality.

The victim, Md. Salauddin, 32, had been living in South Africa and returned to Bangladesh a year ago, had recently sold ancestral property. Local criminals and drug addicts demanded money from him, and when he refused, a dispute escalated. During the attack, Salauddin’s left wrist was splited, and the assailants also stole five lakh taka, his mobile phone, and motorcycle.

Liton Dewan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Begumganj Police Station, confirmed the matter.

"Police have collected video footage from the scene. Investigations are underway to apprehend the perpetrators and legal action will follow based on the family’s complaint," the OC said.
