Mob beating on allegation of religious insult, youth killed in second round of beating after entering hospital

A youth undergoing treatment in hospital after becoming a victim of mob beating on the allegation of religious insult in Debhata of Satkhira has been beaten again. He died after the second round of attack on Tuesday night. The deceased Ohiduzzaman Shamim is the son of Shamsur Rahman of Chhoto Shanta village of the upazila.

It has been learnt from local sources that an audio regarding the allegation of derogatory remarks about Islam spread on social media on Tuesday morning. When anger spread in the area over this, several people beat Shamim in the Sakhipur area of the upazila at noon. Later he attempted suicide by consuming poison at his own house. The family members rescued him and admitted him to Debhata Upazila Health Complex.

Around 9pm at night a group of agitated persons under the banner of ‘Tawhidi Janata’ entered the hospital and beat the under-treatment Shamim again. Later when his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Satkhira Medical College Hospital. He died while undergoing treatment there.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Debhata Police Station HM Shaheen informed that police had rescued Shamim and admitted him to the hospital. Later the incident of attack on him took place at the hospital. The body has been sent to the morgue of the Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

The OC further informed that so far no one has filed a complaint at the police station over this incident. Legal measures will be taken if a complaint is received.
