A group of alleged smugglers reportedly forced members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to release a pickup truck loaded with smuggled goods after creating a mob situation in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria.

The incident took place at Nayanpur Bazar in Baek Union, where the smugglers also allegedly attempted to attack BGB personnel on Wednesday afternoon (June 3).

According to BGB and local sources, smuggled goods are often brought into the country through border areas in Kasba and stored in warehouses at Nayanpur Bazar before being transported elsewhere. Several smugglers allegedly tried to move a consignment of contraband goods using a pickup van on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off, BGB personnel intercepted and seized the vehicle. The smugglers then claimed the goods were legal and pressured the BGB members to release the pickup.

As tensions escalated, more people gathered at the scene and the smugglers allegedly attempted to create a mob. To prevent the situation from deteriorating further, BGB members were eventually compelled to release the seized vehicle.

Lieutenant Colonel S. M. Shafiul Islam, commander of BGB 60 Battalion, said the smugglers acted in an organized manner and attempted to snatch away the seized vehicle.

“The smugglers created a mob and tried to take away the seized vehicle. The situation had reached a point where firing could have become necessary. However, to avoid bloodshed, we were compelled to release the vehicle. Legal action over the incident is underway,” he said.
