‘Mob justice’ is a violent threat to humanity: Tarique Rahman
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has described the rise of “mob justice” as a violent frenzy that poses a grave threat to humanity and democratic values.
In a statement issued Wednesday marking the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, Rahman said that mob justice is not only a symptom of lawlessness but also a dangerous force that undermines the rule of law and fuels further violence.
“Mob justice has emerged as a frenzied force that threatens humanity itself. It creates a culture that opposes justice, democracy, and social harmony,” Rahman said.
The statement, signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, was released to the media on the occasion of the UN-designated observance held annually on June 26 to honor victims of torture.
Tarique criticized the actions of authoritarian governments across the world, stating that state-led repression has left countless individuals killed, injured, or disabled.
“In many countries, oppressive regimes are suppressing dissent with extreme violence. Citizens face grave risks to their lives and property,” he said, adding that these regimes operate with impunity, often detaining or eliminating political opponents.
Referring to the political situation in Bangladesh, Rahman claimed that the country had suffered under “fascist misrule” for nearly 16 years under the Awami League.
“Bangladesh was turned into an authoritarian state. Civil liberties were crushed, press freedom was restricted, and false cases were used to silence opposition,” he alleged.
He specifically mentioned BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, stating she was unjustly imprisoned and denied access to adequate medical care.
“The entire nation lived in fear. It was a period marked by repression and the absence of democratic norms,” Rahman added.
Tarique warned that the spread of mob justice could further destabilize society and obstruct the development of democratic culture.
“To prevent a return to authoritarianism, we must strengthen democratic institutions and uphold the rule of law,” he said. “Unity among democratic forces is essential.”
He emphasized that the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture holds deep importance as a reminder of the need to stand against oppression.
“Despite decolonization, the world remains plagued by violence and injustice. Global democratic solidarity is the key to defeating torture and tyranny.”
