The interim government is working to modernize madrasa education by making it more practical, contemporary, and aligned with today’s needs, Education Adviser Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar (C R Abrar) said on Wednesday. Science, technology, and other modern subjects will be integrated alongside traditional religious studies.

Speaking at the 246th founding anniversary of Government Alia Madrasa, one of the capital’s oldest educational institutions, Professor Abrar said the initiative aims to enhance students’ employability and practical skills while preserving the core values of religious education.

“Madrasa education is a key pillar of the country’s education system. Millions of students have graduated from here and are contributing to society and the state in various fields. Alia Madrasa, established in 1780, is a prime example of this legacy,” he said.

Professor Abrar emphasized that religious education will remain at the heart of madrasa learning. However, modern educational elements will be added to equip students with skills for the contemporary world, including science-based education and practical training.

“We aim to develop madrasa education in a way that is modern, practical, and relevant. Historically, madrasa education combined logic, astronomy, scientific inquiry, and religious studies. Our goal is to revive this tradition while integrating modern science and technology,” he added.

The event was presided over by Professor Mohammad Obaidul Haque, Principal of Government Alia Madrasa. Special guests included Adviser on Religious Affairs A F M Khalid Hossain and Secretary of the Technical and Madrasa Education Division, Muhammad Rafiqul Islam.
