Monzil Morshed, central president of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HPRB), has called for the formation of an expatriate tribunal to ensure the rights of Bangladeshi migrants, urging all expatriates to unite for the cause. He made the remarks during a seminar and exchange of views organised by HPRB’s Sweden branch.

The event was held on 10 September at 6:00 pm at Kista Traf Conference Hall in Stockholm, with Morshed speaking as the chief guest. The session was chaired by Golam Rabbani, president of HPRB Sweden, and conducted by Fakhruddin Ahmed. Special guest Mahibul Khan also attended.

During the seminar, expatriates shared experiences of rights violations during visits to Bangladesh and their inability to obtain proper redress. Speakers included Swedish expatriates Mir Murtaza Hossain, Helal Uddin, Saleh Rahman, Ainul Haque, and M. Khurshed Alam Chowdhury.

Morshed said, “Thousands of Bangladeshi expatriates live across the world and send remittances, contributing significantly to the national economy. Yet, during visits, they often face harassment at airports and other places and are denied proper redress. Their property and land are sometimes forcibly or fraudulently seized, and short stays in Bangladesh make it difficult to navigate lengthy legal processes. This leaves many frustrated. For such issues, an expatriate tribunal must be established. If expatriates unite regardless of political affiliation, it will be easier to claim their rights. HPRB will provide legal assistance to protect their rights in Bangladesh.”

The seminar provided a platform for expatriates to discuss their experiences and emphasise the urgent need for an expatriate

tribunal.
