The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on Thursday appointed senior High Court lawyer AY Moshiuzzaman as amicus curiae in the contempt of court proceedings against Sheikh Hasina.

The tribunal issued the order on the scheduled hearing of the prosecution’s petition, which seeks contempt of court proceedings against Hasina over remarks she allegedly made during a telephonic conversation with a party leader.

The petition arose from a leaked phone conversation that circulated widely on social media last year before being reported by several mainstream media outlets.

In the audio clip, Hasina is heard saying to former Gobindaganj Upazila Parishad Chairman Shakil Akanda Bulbul, “I have had 227 cases filed against me, so I have received a license to kill 227 people.”

The tribunal considers the statement contemptuous, following a petition filed on April 30 this year.
