Mother, daughter among four killed in Patuakhali road crash
Four people, including a mother and her daughter, were killed when a passenger bus rammed over an autorickshaw in Patuakhali.
The accident took place around 11:30pm near Payra Filling Station in Ballavpur under Patuakhali Sadar upazila late Saturday night (September 19).
Three people died at the scene, while another died at a hospital. All four victims were travelling in the autorickshaw, including its driver.
The deceased were autorickshaw driver Md Kaiyum Paida, 50, passengers Md Jahangir Hossain Hawladar, 40, Shilpi Rani, 40, and her daughter Bithi Rani, 23.
Jahangir was from Gabua village in Golkhali Union of Galachipa upazila, while the other three were from Amkhola in the same upazila.
Ten people were injured in the crash, with two in critical condition at Patuakhali Medical College Hospital.
Passengers and local residents said the Imran Travels bus had left Taltali in Barguna for Dhaka around 9:30pm. They alleged that the bus was travelling at high speed when it lost control while negotiating a bend near the filling station and hit the autorickshaw.
Patuakhali Fire Service officer Md Rezwan said a team reached the scene after receiving an emergency call through 999 and recovered three bodies, which were handed over to police.
Md Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Patuakhali Sadar Police Station, said, "The three bodies recovered from the scene were sent to the morgue, while another victim died in hospital."
"A recovery operation was under way to retrieve the two vehicles from a roadside ditch, and the casualty figure could rise," he added.
