Mother killed by own son over family dispute in Faridpur

An elderly woman was allegedly killed by her son during a family dispute at Alfadanga upazila in Faridpur.

The incident took place around 9:00am in Ponditbana village under Bana union of the upazila on Thursday morning (May 28).

The deceased was identified as Fuljan Begum, 60, wife of Hafizar Sheikh of the village.

Police said the accused, Hossain Sheikh, 25, went into hiding immediately after the incident.

According to police and local residents, Hossain had been living alone since his wife left him shortly after their marriage. On the day of the incident, Fuljan Begum went near her son’s room to plant flower saplings when an argument broke out between the two over a family matter.

At one stage, Hossain allegedly struck his mother on the head with a spade, leaving her dead on the spot.

Fakir Taijur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Alfadanga Police Station, confirmed the incident, saying the attack stemmed from a family dispute and a trivial altercation.

He said police have launched a drive to arrest the accused, who remains absconding.
