Mother of four allegedly gang raped in Narsingdi, one arrested

A 40-year-old woman, mother of four children, was allegedly gang raped after meeting a man she had recently become acquainted with over the phone in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi area.

Police have arrested one suspect in connection with the incident.

The incident took place on the bank of a fish farm pond in Padmarkanda area under Kathalia union of Madhabdi Police Station on the night of March 5.

The victim filed a complaint with police on the morning of March 6, and the accused, Ridoy Mia, 32, was arrested later in the afternoon.

Police said the victim is originally from Gopaldi village in Araihazar, Narayanganj, and currently lives in Mendatola area of Madhabdi municipality.

According to the case statement, the woman went to a market in Araihazar with her daughter on Thursday afternoon for Eid shopping. After buying clothes for her daughter, she sent her home before iftar.

The victim had recently become acquainted with Ridoy Mia of Khoria village through mobile phone conversations. When he learned that she was in Araihazar, he asked to meet her.

Later that night, the woman travelled alone by auto-rickshaw to Padmarkanda area to meet him. During their conversation, Ridoy proposed marriage. When she refused, he allegedly dragged her towards the pond bank.

According to the complaint, three other men who had been waiting there joined him and gang raped the woman. They later took her mobile phone and money before leaving the scene.

The victim later sought shelter at a nearby power-loom factory and informed workers about the incident.

Officer-in-Charge Kamal Hossain of Madhabdi Police Station said the incident occurred near the border of Narayanganj and Narsingdi districts. Ridoy Mia was arrested by tracking his mobile number and reportedly confessed during preliminary interrogation.

Police said efforts are ongoing to arrest the other suspects.
