Mother, son among 3 drowned in Chandpur

Three people, including a mother and son, drowned in separate incidents in ponds in Chandpur Sadar Upazila. The incidents took place between 10:00am and 12:00pm on Wednesday (April 9) at Bakharpur village in the Chandra and Balia unions of Chandpur Sadar.

The deceased were identified as Khadija Akter (30), her son Abu Bakar (7), and a child named Maksuda (2).

Mohammad Bahar Mia, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed the matter.

According to the relatives of the deceased Khadija, Khadija Akter and her two children came to visit her father's house at Bakharpur village. Around 10.00 am, she went down to the pond with her two sons while taking bath. Neither the two sons nor the mother knew how to swim. When the sons drowned in the water, the mother rescued the elder son. After diving into the water for the younger son Abu Bakar both of them drowned.

Later, the family members rescued them and took them to Chandpur Government Jalal Hospital where the doctor declared them dead.

According to sources, Khadija had come to visit her father's house yesterday. Their home is originally in Faridpur, but she lived in Dhaka with her husband Lokman. They were planning to return to Dhaka on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a 2-year-old girl named Maksuda drowned in a pond in the nearby Balia Union around 10:30am. She was later rescued and taken to Chandpur Government Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Maksuda was the daughter of Fazlur Rahman from the area.

Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bahar Mia stated, "After completing the legal formalities, the bodies will be handed over to the families."
