Mother, son among 3 electrocuted in Jamalpur

Three individuals, including a mother and her teenage son, were killed in separate electrocution incidents in Dewanganj and Melandaha upazilas of Jamalpur on Tuesday evening (September 1).

The deceased were identified as Lucky Akhter, 40, and her son Raju, 14, of the Old Rail Line area in Dewanganj; Mohammad Zunaid Hasan Tayeb, a Class X student of Kona Malancha Amena Dakhil Madrasah in Melandaha.

According to police and locals sources, Raju was electrocuted while attempting to repair a faulty electrical connection at his house in Dewanganj on that evening. His mother was electrocuted when she tried to rescue him after seeing him stuck to a live wire.

Raju's grandmother, Buli Begum, also suffered serious injuries when she attempted to rescue her daughter-in-law and grandson.

Anowar Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dewanganj model police station, said that police visited the spot after receiving the information. 

The family had not filed any complaint in connection with the incident, he said.

In a separate incident in Melandaha that afternoon, Tayeb was electrocuted on his educational institution's premises.

ATM Mahmudul Haque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Melandaha police station, said that Tayeb had left his books in the classroom during a break and gone outside to play. After the classes ended, he returned to collect his books and came into contact with an exposed electrical wire near the roof of the building.

He died on the spot, the OC said.

Tayeb's body was handed over to his family after completing the necessary legal procedures.
