Police recovered the bodies of a woman and her six-year-old son from their home in Bagharpara upazila of Jashore on Saturday night (August 8).

The deceased were identified as Zubayda Khatun, 32, wife of Zakir Hossain, and their son Jisan.

Police said Jisan’s hands and legs were tied with a towel, while a scarf was found wrapped around Zubayda’s neck. Both ends of the scarf were reportedly in her hands.

The bodies were recovered from their home in Khalshi village at around 9:00pm following a report of the incident.

Police said the condition of the scene suggested that the deaths may not have been straightforward, but no conclusion has yet been reached about how the mother and son died.

Their exact cause of death will be determined after autopsies, the added.

Pinjira, Zubayda’s younger sister, said Zakir had lived abroad for a long time before returning to Bangladesh about a year ago. She also said Zakir had a dispute with his brother Shihab over land and property, and suspected that the conflict could be linked to the deaths.

Palash, a police inspector at Bagharpara police station, said investigators had found the circumstances at the scene suspicious.

“An autopsy will be conducted to determine the actual cause of death,” he said, adding that further details would emerge after the post-mortem report is received.

Police have begun investigating the incident.
