Mother, son killed in lightning strike in Gaibandha

Two people, a mother and her son, were killed after being electrocuted by lightning in Saghata upazila of Gaibandha.

The incident occurred around 7:00pm in Mandura village under Bhurungamari Union on Wednesday evening, officials confirmed on Thursday (June 4).

The deceased were identified as Kalpana Rani, 55, and her son Sohag Chandra Das, 30, of the same village.

Saghata Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) confirmed the incident and said the affected family has been provided financial assistance of Tk 50,000.

According to local and family sources, Sohag worked at a garment factory in Dhaka and had returned home for the Eid holiday. On Wednesday evening, as rain clouds gathered, he went to a nearby field to collect dried leaves. His mother later joined him there. Shortly afterwards, lightning struck the area, leaving both unconscious on the spot.

Locals rescued them and rushed them towards Gaibandha General Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival around 8:00pm.
