Mother, son killed in Tongi road accident

Ayesha Khatun (45) and her son Yasin (22) have been killed after being run over by a speeding covered van in Tongi, Gazipur. Yasin's wife Arjina (19) was critically injured in the incident.

The accident occurred around 3:45pm on Sunday, September 27, in the Station Road area of Tongi flyover.

The deceased, Ayesha Khatun and Yasin, are the wife and son of Md Chan Mia, a resident of Badam Machhia area of Muktagachha Police Station in Mymensingh.

Chan Mia said that after a wedding ceremony at their village home, they came to the Tongi Station Road area by bus to return to their rented house in the Nimtoli area of Tongi. After getting off the bus, Ayesha, Yasin and Arjina were standing on the adjacent footpath.

At that time, a speeding covered van ran them over. Ayesha, Yasin and Arjina were critically injured on the spot. Later, they were rescued and taken to Tongi Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital, where doctors declared Yasin dead. Critically injured Ayesha also died while undergoing treatment after being taken to the hospital. The injured Arjina is being treated at the hospital.

Police and eyewitnesses said that after the accident, the covered van tried to flee quickly. With the help of locals, police detained the covered van and its driver.

Tongi Purba Police Station Officer-in-Charge Maksudul Alam said two people have died. The killer vehicle's driver has been detained.
