A woman and her two daughters were hacked to death in a attack inside a rented house in Raipur upazila of Lakshmipur.

The brutal attack took place in the Godown Road area of Raipur municipality on Thursday (June 25).

The victims were identified as Shahinur Begum, 38, her eldest daughter Sayma Akter, 21, a student of Dhaka University, and her youngest daughter Shifa Akter, 9.

Another daughter, Ikra Akter, 17, sustained severe injuries and was transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Police said the assailant entered the family's rented residence and carried out the attack with a sharp weapon. The motive behind the killings remains unclear.

According to local residents, Shahinur had been living in Raipur with her children since the death of her husband, Kamal, who was electrocuted several years ago. The family originally hailed from Cumilla.

Following the incident, an unidentified young man suspected of involvement in the attack was detained by locals and beaten by an angry mob before being rescued and taken to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital for treatment.

The killings sparked tensions in the area, with clashes breaking out as police attempted to restore order. Several officers were injured after being hit by bricks and stones thrown by agitated residents.

Raipur health officials confirmed that five people were brought to the hospital after the incident. Three were declared dead, while Ikra remains in critical condition with multiple injuries caused by a sharp weapon.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Raipur Circle) Md. Abdur Rashed said the bodies of the three victims have been kept at the hospital morgue. Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the killings.

"Efforts are also underway to identify the attacker and establish the motive behind the deadly assault," he added.
