BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has alleged that party chairperson Khaleda Zia is in a “critical condition” as a result of what he described as prolonged persecution and neglect.

He made the remarks in a post from his official Facebook account on Friday (December 6).

In the post, Tarique Rahman accused Sheikh Hasina’s government of subjecting Khaleda Zia to imprisonment, repression, and various forms of harassment.

According to him, the continuous pressure and mistreatment have left her severely ill.

He also claimed that millions of BNP activists had faced widespread oppression during that period.

In the post, he also called December 6, 1990 a historic day, marking the fall of military ruler Hussain Muhammad Ershad after years of public protests. He said Ershad’s 1982 takeover dismantled democratic institutions and reversed the multiparty system introduced by former president Ziaur Rahman.

He credited Khaleda Zia for leading a determined, uncompromising nine-year movement to restore democracy, culminating in the fall of the autocratic regime on December 6, 1990 through the combined strength of students and the public.

Tarique Rahman also paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the anti-autocracy movement from 1982 to 1990, offering prayers for them.

Tarique Rahman further drew parallels with 2024, calling the Awami League a longstanding enemy of democracy and stressed the need to continue efforts to restore democratic values in state and society.

Concluding his statement, he urged all pro-democracy forces to remain united so that “anti-democratic elements” cannot resurface.
