Motorcyclist Killed in covered van crash at Jahangir Gate
A motorcyclist was killed after a covered van ran over his motorcycle at Jahangir Gate in the capital on Saturday night (August 8).
The accident took place around 9:00pm, while the identity of the deceased was not immediately known.
According to eyewitnesses, the covered van was travelling from the Mohakhali direction when it hit the motorcycle while turning at the Jahangir Gate intersection. The motorcycle went under the vehicle, killing the rider on the spot.
Kashoinyu Marma, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tejgaon Police Station, said, "Police went to the scene after receiving information about the accident. The body was later recovered and sent to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for identification and further procedures."
Following the crash, several motorcycle riders at the scene stopped the covered van. The driver was reportedly assaulted by some people before police arrived and brought the situation under control.
Later, the police seized the vehicle and detained the driver.
Tejgaon Traffic Division Sergeant Sohel Rana, who was at the scene, said the driver allegedly made no immediate effort to rescue the victim after the motorcycle became trapped beneath the van.
The accident briefly disrupted traffic as the victim's body and the damaged motorcycle remained on the road.
Police said they were investigating the exact circumstances of the crash and working to identify the deceased and contact his family. Legal proceedings against the detained driver are underway.
