MP Gazi Nazrul’s second wife Mariam buried in Shyamnagar

Mariam Khatun, the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, was buried in her family cemetery in Gabura, Shyamnagar, late Monday night (September 21), following her funeral prayers.

Her body reached Sardarpara in Gabura by boat around 11pm after being transported by road from Dhaka. Family members accompanied the body, which was taken across the Kapatakkha River from Koyra.

The funeral prayer was held at about 12:35am beside the Gabura Westpara Sardar Bari Jame Mosque, with local madrasa teacher Maulana Nurul Huda leading the prayers. Relatives, local residents and police officials attended. Mariam was later laid to rest beside the graves of other family members.

Mariam’s family had moved away from the area after Cyclone Aila in 2009 and later settled in Dhaka. Her burial brought relatives and local residents to the family home, where mourners gathered quietly as preparations were completed.

Mariam, 19, was found hanging inside a flat at NAM Bhaban in Dhaka on Sunday evening. Her father, SM Masum Billah, later filed a case accusing Gazi Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda Begum and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of allegedly abetting her suicide.

A Dhaka court subsequently placed Gazi Nazrul on four-day remand and Maksuda on one-day remand, while Obaidur remains at large.
