Teachers of non-government educational institutions could previously work in journalism, law, or non-governmental organisations. However, the new MPO guidelines state they cannot now hold any financially lucrative positions.

The Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education issued the new MPO guidelines on Sunday, December 7. Sub-section 17 of section 11 of the guidelines states that MPO-listed teachers and staff shall not hold multiple or financially gainful positions. Violation will result in cancellation of MPO benefits and other punitive measures from the government.

Part 'B' clearly specifies that a financially gainful position means any government or non-government establishment, journalism, law, or any salaried work.

An additional secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division said, "This is not intended to target journalism. Government employees also cannot work in other financially lucrative organisations. MPO teachers receive salaries, house rent allowances, Eid bonuses, and other benefits from government funds. Therefore, they cannot be involved in any financially lucrative profession. Action will be taken if violated."
