Following continuous protests, the government has decided to raise the house rent allowance of MPO-listed teachers by 15 percent, to be implemented in two phases.

According to a meeting held on October 21 between Education Adviser Professor CR Abrar and leaders of the protesting teachers, 7.5 percent of the increase will be provided from November 1 this year, and the remaining 7.5 percent will take effect from July next year.

A gazette notification will be issued soon in this regard. The allowance will include a minimum increment of Tk 2,000.

Speaking at the meeting, the education adviser said he felt privileged to help secure this increase, describing it as a collective success of teachers, the ministry, and the government.

He emphasised that teachers deserve greater respect and that the state must remain committed to improving their quality of life. Despite disagreements and disputes during the process, the ministry continued working toward a fair and sustainable solution.

“The teachers’ movement reminded us of our responsibility, and the government responded accordingly. Now, it’s time to return to classrooms and continue our real mission of educating the next generation,” Professor Abrar added.

He expressed optimism that mutual respect and quality education would help build a more dignified Bangladesh.
