Police have uncovered the mystery behind the murder of housewife Najma Alam, 51, in the Biswas Betka area of Tangail town. The local mosque muezzin, who had gone to the spot with neighbours after the murder expressing concern and demanded the arrest of the killers in front of the media, has been identified as the main accused in the case.

The arrested Md. Mosharraf Hossain, 42, has confessed to the murder and given a statement before the court. His confession was recorded in the court of Tangail Judicial Magistrate Golam Mahbub Khan on Tuesday. He was later sent to jail.

Police said the deceased Najma Alam was a resident of Biswash Betka area in Tangail town and wife of veterinary doctor Shafiul Alam. On Sunday morning, after her husband left for work, she was alone at home. Around 11:30am, the housemaid found her lying on the sofa with hands tied and in a bloodied condition. Family members arrived and found her gold ornaments, cash money, and the house’s CCTV DVR missing. The monitor was also smashed.

Using technical information and local intelligence, police arrested muezzin Mosharraf Hossain. During interrogation, he said he went to Najma Alam on the day of the incident to borrow money. When he did not get the money, he became angry, took a hammer from beside the basin and hit her on the head. When she became unconscious, he tied her hands and strangled her with a rope.

According to police, after the murder Mosharraf took two gold bangles, one gold chain, and around 30,000 taka from Najma Alam. He removed the CCTV DVR to destroy evidence and smashed the monitor. He then washed the clothes he was wearing and appeared at the scene with neighbours behaving normally. He even gave statements to the media demanding the quick arrest of the killers.

Investigation revealed that Mosharraf had sold the stolen gold ornaments to a local jeweller. Police arrested the jeweller Santosh Karmakar and recovered the gold ornaments from him. Additionally, 26,320 taka in cash and the clothes worn during the murder were seized from the accused’s room.

Police said investigation into all aspects of the incident is ongoing and further legal action is being taken.
