Multiple cocktail blasts near govt installations in Gopalganj
Several cocktail explosions near various government installations in Gopalganj have spread panic among the public. Around 7:30 pm on Tuesday, a cocktail was detonated on the footpath adjacent to the southern wall of the municipality. Although the blast created a loud noise, no casualties were reported.
Earlier, cocktail explosions took place at five key installations in the city. These included the Sadar Police Station premises, in front of the main gate of Gopalganj University of Science and Technology, on the road in front of the Chief Judicial Magistrate's office, in front of the District and Sessions Judge's residence, and in front of the Bedgram Ansar Camp.
Gopalganj District Police spokesperson, Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Muhammad Sarwar Hossain, confirmed the matter.
He said evidence had been collected from the spots and that operations and intelligence surveillance were ongoing to arrest those involved. Senior officials had visited the sites, he added. Police claimed that the law and order situation and vehicular movement were currently normal.
Such explosions targeting vital installations ahead of the election have caused concern among the public. Keramat Mollah, a resident of the municipality, said people were terrified by the series of blasts. Questions were being raised as to why those involved had not been identified or arrested despite CCTV cameras being installed across the city.
However, no fatalities or major damage have been reported so far. Police said the situation was under control and efforts were underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
