Munshiganj-3: Two injured in gunfire during clash over election campaign
Supporters of the Paddy Sheaf (Dhaner Sheesh) candidate attacked the election campaign of a rebel independent candidate with the Football symbol by hurling cocktails and obstructing it with local weapons in the Munshikandi area of Mollakandi union under Munshiganj-3 (Sadar) constituency. This led to a series of chases, counter-chases, and assaults between supporters of the two candidates. Tension is currently prevailing in the area.
The incident began around 11:30 am on Saturday and has continued intermittently until the afternoon.
Local sources said that on Saturday morning, supporters of Football symbol candidate and district BNP member Ataur Rahman Mallik went to the Munshikandi area to seek votes. At that time, supporters of Sheaf of Paddy candidate Kamruzzaman Ratan, including local BNP leaders Ujir Ali and Aoulad Molla, attacked them with cocktails. Later, in videos of the incident that went viral, people from Aoulad's side were seen positioned with multiple weapons. When news of this spread, supporters of the Football symbol candidate united and advanced, leading to a chase, counter-chase, and exchange of gunfire between the two groups in an agricultural field. Both sides are currently in a face-off. As there is a fear of further clashes at any moment, panic is spreading among innocent villagers.
Munshiganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mominul Islam said they had a prior feud over establishing dominance. They have become active in the area again as the election approaches. Police have been dispatched to the scene.
