A young man named Rakib Madbar (24) was brutally hacked to death in public by rivals in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district.

The attack took place around 8 pm on Sunday (14 September) on the main road of Shibchar Bazar, where a group of four to five assailants assaulted Rakib with sharp weapons in front of bystanders, leaving him critically injured.

He died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Rakib, son of Nasir Madbar from Charshyamail village, had recently been released on bail in a murder case. He was a final-year political science student at Barhamganj College.

According to reports, on 6 May, a clash broke out between supporters of Rakib’s family and those of Abul Kalam Sardar of Charshyamail over establishing dominance in the area. During the violence, Abul Kalam’s son, Ibne Samad, was killed, and Rakib was arrested in that case. He was released on bail about a week ago.

Witnesses said Rakib was standing near Shibchar municipal market on Sunday night when the assailants attacked him and fled. Locals rushed him to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex, but doctors referred him to Dhaka. He succumbed to his injuries on the way.

Shibchar Police Station OC Rokibul Islam said police have inspected the scene. He added that Rakib was an accused in the Ibne Samad murder case, and his killing appears to be an act of retaliation. Preparations are underway to file a case over the incident.
