Police have arrested the main accused in the brutal murder of 7-year-old child Ramisa Akhter in Pallabi in the capital.

Sohel Rana, 34, was arrested from Fatulla in Narayanganj on Tuesday evening, police said.

Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mostaq Sarkar told the media that the accused has not been interrogated in detail yet. Details will be given in a briefing after his interrogation.

Earlier around 11:30 am on Tuesday, police recovered Ramisa's body from a third-floor flat in house number 39, Road No. 7, Block B, Section No. 11, Mirpur. After killing the child, her head was severed. The severed head was found in the toilet and the main body part was found under the bed.

Police said that Sohel Rana started living in that room with his wife two months ago. After the incident, he escaped by breaking the toilet grill. However, his wife was immediately captured from the house.

A police officer said that the child's body was recovered from a neighboring flat within an hour of her disappearance. The child was killed between 10:30 and 11 am today. The police recovered the body after 11 am after receiving the information on 999.

Police and family said that Ramisa Akhter was studying in the second grade at a local school. Her father's name is Abdul Hannan Molla, who works in a recruiting agency. Her mother's name is Parveen Akhter. Ramisa is the younger of their two daughters. The elder daughter Raisa Akhter is studying in the ninth grade at a local school. The family has been living in a flat on the north side of the third floor of house number 39, road number 7, B block, Mirpur-11 section for about 17 years.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Mostaq Sarkar visited the scene this afternoon and told reporters that Sohel Rana, a tenant of the adjacent flat, has been identified as the main suspect in the murder of the child. He is a rickshaw mechanic by profession. Some blood-stained evidence has been recovered from his room. His wife has been detained and is being questioned in this incident.

Ramisa's uncle AKM Nazrul Islam told the media that Ramisa was supposed to go to school with her elder sister Raisa at 10:30 am. Suddenly Ramisa was not found. Her mother Parveen saw one of Ramisa's shoes lying outside the door of the flat. Then she knocked on the door of the adjacent flat. The door, which was locked from the inside, was not opening. Despite knocking for a long time, none opened the door. This further increased suspicion. Later, when the matter was reported to the police, the police came, broke the door and entered inside and recovered Ramisa's body.
