A wave of violence erupted in Dahor Moshiahati village of Abhaynagar upazila after Krishok Dal leader Tariqul Islam Sardar was brutally hacked and shot dead on Thursday evening (May 22).

In retaliation, supporters of Tariqul set fire to 18 houses, including the residence of the main accused, and looted several properties.

The violence has forced all the men in the area to flee, leaving the village largely deserted and the women in a state of panic. Many homes were reduced to charred brick walls, with significant damage to household items such as paddy barns, kitchens, cowsheds, TVs, refrigerators, motorcycles, and bicycles. At least 10 people were injured during the unrest.

The initial arson targeted three houses of the accused Pintu Biswas. Later, 15 others were also set on fire in the surrounding area. Since the incident, the affected area has been without electricity.

Jashore district administration has responded by providing emergency aid to the victims. On May 24, 18 affected families received 30 kg of rice, Tk6,000 in cash, and roofing tin sheets.

Azaharul Islam, deputy commissioner, said: "The administration is closely monitoring the situation and promised further assistance as needed."

"Police, alongside fire service personnel, managed to control the blaze on the night of the attack. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder, though no case has yet been filed regarding the arson," he added.

Tariqul Islam, 50, was the president of the Nawapara Municipal Krishok Dal and son of Ibrahim Sardar from Dhopadi village. His family alleges that the killing stemmed from a dispute over lease rights.
