Myanmar soldiers and five BGP members detained at Ghumdhum border

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained four members of the Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) and one member of the junta army at the Ghumdhum border in Naikhongchhari, Bandarban.

On Sunday, November 23, they were arrested near the 42nd border pillar in Gachhbonia Para, Ward 9 of Ghumdhum Union.

Local sources said that around one and a half kilometres inside Bangladesh from border pillar 42, the Myanmar soldiers and BGP members sought shelter with locals. The 34 BGB unit at Mongjoypara BOP subsequently arrested them and brought them to the BOP.

The detainees are Ko Ko Sine (35) from Momeik, Shan State; Soethu Ra (38) from Pantanaw, Ayeyarwady Region; Ong San Htaw (25) from Magatutaw, Ayeyarwady Region; Kyaw Zay Lin (32) from Ayeyarwady Region; and Min Minwo (41) from Yangon, a member of the junta army.

Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mazharul Islam Chowdhury confirmed that the detainees are in BGB custody.

Naikhongchhari police officer-in-charge Masrurul Haq said the police are aware of the arrests but they have not yet been formally handed over to the station. Legal action will follow once they are.
