Mymensingh tops corruption list, Khulna leads in bribery: TIB

In the picture of department-wise corruption in the country's service sector, Mymensingh division has been the most corrupt. On the other hand, people of Khulna division have been forced to pay the most bribes while receiving services. This information has emerged from the report 'Corruption in the Service Sector: National Household Survey 2025' published by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).

According to the TIB survey, 81.6 percent of people nationally have been victims of corruption in some way while receiving services in the country. At the same time, 63.6 percent of people have been forced to pay bribes to receive various services.

A division-wise analysis shows that the highest number of families in Mymensingh division, 88.9 percent, have been victims of corruption. The bribe-giving rate in this division is 66.6 percent.

The rate of families who have been victims of corruption in Khulna division is 88 percent. However, the highest rate in the country in terms of bribery is in this division—73.6 percent of people have been forced to pay bribes while receiving services.

In Barisal division, the corruption rate is 87.6 percent and the bribery rate is 69.1 percent. In Rangpur division, the corruption rate is 85.7 percent and the bribery rate is 62.8 percent.

In the capital Dhaka and its surrounding areas, 80.1 percent of people have been victims of corruption. The bribery rate in this region is 63.9 percent.

In Chattogram division, the corruption rate is 79.4 percent and the bribery rate is 59.4 percent. In Sylhet division, the rates are 79.3 percent and 58.9 percent, respectively.

Although comparatively low, 72.9 percent of people have also been victims of corruption in Rajshahi division. The bribery rate in this division is 58.8 percent.

TIB said that this picture of the service sector shows that it has not yet been possible to ensure harassment-free and transparent services for the common people at the grassroots level of the country. The organization has emphasized strict law enforcement, effective monitoring, and increased accountability in government services to control corruption.
