Nahida’s family calls for speedy trial after US killing
Family and Locals Demand Swift Justice Over Murder of Madaripur Student Nahida Sultana Brishti in US.
On a visit to Brishti's village, it was seen that the news of Brishti's death has cast a shadow of grief over her village. Locals and relatives have demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers.
Nahida Sultana Brishti is the daughter of Zahir Uddin Akon, a resident of Char Gobindapur area of Khowajpur Union in Madaripur Sadar Upazila. She was doing a PhD in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of South Florida (USF) in the United States. Earlier, she was a student at Noakhali University of Science and Technology.
Brishti's father Zahir Uddin Akon said, 'My daughter Brishti went to the United States for higher education on August 12, 2025. We last spoke to her on April 16. She has been missing since then. Later, we received news of her death. I demand exemplary punishment for my daughter's killers. I request the concerned authorities to bring her body back to the country soon.’
The deceased's uncle Daniyal Akon said, ‘If she was alive, she could have done a lot for the country. But she was brutally murdered. We want justice.’
According to relatives and local sources, although Brishti's family has lived in Dhaka for a long time, they used to come to their village home for various festivals and events. Her father works in a private organization and her elder brother is an engineer. Brishti was very talented since childhood. She migrated to the United States for higher education.
Yesterday, the family members learned about Brishti's death on Saturday morning (April 25). Since then, a crowd of relatives and neighbors has gathered at the village home. Everyone is mourning this brutal murder.
The deceased's cousin Tuli Akhter said, ‘Brishti was a very talented and polite girl. We came to know about this after seeing her elder brother's Facebook post in the morning. She was missing before this. We don't know anything about how she was killed. We want a fair trial in this incident.'
Another cousin, Fazila Akhter, said, 'I can't accept such a death in any way. I demand the immediate arrest and punishment of the killers and the repatriation of Birshi's body.'
In this regard, Madaripur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wadia Shabab said that he learned about the matter through various means. The embassy will mainly work in this incident. If the family wants any assistance, it will be provided by the administration.
