Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tarikul Islam has said that the killing of four members of the same family in Naogaon was not a robbery. Preliminary investigation suggests the murders occurred due to a family dispute over land.

He made the remarks while visiting the scene on Tuesday afternoon, April 21.

The victims were identified as Habibur Rahman, 32, son of Nomir Uddin of Bahadurpur village in the upazila; his wife Popi Sultana, 25; their son Parvez, 9; and their three-year-old daughter Sadiya Akhtar. The bodies were discovered after neighbours noticed the door open following Fajr prayers and informed police.

The SP said the possibility of robbery was ruled out as the earrings of the deceased woman were found intact. The incident appears to be linked to a family or land-related dispute. He assured that the mystery would be solved quickly.

Four individuals have so far been taken into police custody for questioning: the victim Habibur's father Nomir Uddin, 70; his two sisters Dalima and Halima; and his nephew Shobuj Rana, 25.

According to local sources, there had been a long-running family dispute between Habibur and his sister Shirina over land. Allegations have been made that death threats were issued previously. The victim Popi Sultana's father, Moazzem Hossain, has directly alleged that Shirina and her son Shobuj Rana are involved in the murders and that they had previously attempted to kill his daughter and son-in-law.
