Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of the interim government, has announced that the national parliamentary election will be held in the first half of April next year.

In a speech to the nation on Friday evening (June 6), on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, the Chief Advise said, "We will try our best to carry out the mandate you have given us, even if only to a minimum extent. With this in mind, we have held discussions with all parties to organize the most free, fair, competitive, and acceptable election of the history."

"After reviewing the ongoing reforms related to the judiciary, administration, and elections, I announce to the people of the country that the next national election will be held on any day in the first half of April 2026. Based on this announcement, the Election Commission will provide you with a detailed roadmap for the election at the appropriate time," he added.

Chief Adviser expressed hope that, after nearly two decades, the country will finally see the formation of a truly representative parliament. He noted that a large number of young voters will be casting their votes for the first time, and emphasized the government's commitment to taking all necessary steps to ensure a fair and inclusive election.

In his address, Dr. Yunus called on the people to demand clear and firm commitments from all political parties and candidates in their constituencies. He urged voters to ensure that, in the first session of the new parliament, the reforms that have already gained national consensus are approved without any changes or delays.

“You must make them promise that they will never compromise the country’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, or national dignity, and that they will never trade national interests with any foreign power,” said Dr. Yunus.

He further added, “You should get specific commitments from them that, under no circumstances, will they undermine your democratic rights or human dignity.”

Dr. Yunus concluded by saying, “We want an election that will bring peace to the souls of the martyrs of past uprisings. We hope the highest number of voters, candidates, and political parties will take part in this election. Let it be remembered by the nation as the most free, fair, and neutral election in our history.”
