National Voters' Day being celebrated today
Today, March 2, marks the seventh observance of National Voters' Day across the country, with the theme "In our Bangladesh, we will vote together."
The Election Commission (EC) has been celebrating this day annually since 2018 to promote awareness about democracy, elections, and voting rights.
Coordinators from anti-discrimination movements have been specially invited to the event.
Various programmes have been organised in Dhaka and at the district, upazila, and regional election offices to commemorate the occasion of National Voters' Day.
On Sunday, the EC will release the final updated voter list for 2024. According to the latest data, the total number of voters in the country is 121,850,160, with 62,244,587 male voters, 59,746,641 female voters, and 932 third-gender voters.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin inaugurated the day in front of the Election Building in Dhaka at 9 am, with Election Commissioners in attendance. A colorful rally was held after the inauguration. Additionally, a discussion meeting will take place at the Election Building auditorium at 11 am, with the Chief Election Commissioner as the chief guest. Various awareness programmes, including rallies and discussions, are also planned at the district and upazila levels.
Md Ashadul Haque, assistant director (Public Relations) of the Election Commission Secretariat, said, "These programmes aim to increase voter awareness and strengthen democratic values."
The event also features participation representatives from the European Union and UNDP, and members of the observer group. Special publications are being released in national dailies, and a special talk show focusing on the importance of Voters' Day will be broadcast on Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar.
It's important to note that in April 2018, a cabinet decision established March 1 as National Voters' Day. However, since 2019, the date has been shifted to March 2.
