The historic and eventful November 7 is being observed across the country under different names by various political and social groups.

The Bangladesh Nationalists Party (BNP) is observing the day as “National Revolution and Solidarity Day,” while the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) calls it “Sipahi-Janata Uprising Day.” Progressive parties and organisations, however, mark it as “Freedom Fighter-Soldier Killing Day.”

The events surrounding the day date back to 1975, following the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15 and the subsequent killing of the four national leaders on November 3. Amid a series of military coups, then-Army Chief Major General Ziaur Rahman was freed from detention through an uprising on November 7, a turning point in the country’s political history.

To commemorate the day, the BNP has launched a nine-day programme featuring rallies, discussions, and photo exhibitions. Party flags were hoisted across the country at dawn, followed by floral tributes and prayers at Ziaur Rahman’s grave. A central rally will be held at 3.00pm in front of the BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters, with similar programmes in districts and upazilas.

The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal is hosting a two-day photo exhibition at Dhaka University’s TSC, followed by a discussion session.

The Ulama Dal will distribute education materials to orphan students on November 9, while the Tanti Dal and Krishak Dal will hold separate discussions on November 10 and 11.

The Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha will conclude the observance with a cultural programme at the Central Shaheed Minar on November 13.

In a statement, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said the spirit of November 7 remains relevant today, noting that the fall of the “fascist regime” on August 5 last year reopened the path to democracy.

He emphasized the importance of free and fair elections, protection of fundamental rights, and establishment of justice and good governance.
