Navy police constable dies after patrol boat collision in Narayanganj
A Bangladesh Police constable died while on anti-robbery river patrol after a patrol vessel collided with a bulkhead and capsized in Narayanganj.
The deceased, Mohsin Sardar, 43, was part of a night patrol team deployed to prevent river piracy along the Dhaleshwari–Shitalakkhya confluence area near Shah Cement Factory.
The incident took place around 10:30pm on Thursday (May 7) when the patrol boat from Kolagachia Naval Police Outpost struck a moving bulkhead in low visibility conditions, causing the vessel to overturn.
Officials said the patrol team, led by Sub-Inspector Mofizul Haque, managed to swim to safety and take refuge on a nearby vessel, but Constable Mohsin was critically injured and fell into the river.
He was later rescued by locals and rushed to Narayanganj Victoria General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said intensified night patrols had been underway due to a recent rise in riverine robbery incidents in the area.
Officer-in-charge Rakibuzzaman described the incident as “tragic” and confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the accident and assess damages.
Authorities said legal procedures are underway in connection with the incident.
